Treating Migraines with Botox®

It usually comes out of nowhere and completely disrupts your daily life—headaches or migraines. Do you frequently suffer from headaches or migraine attacks and have already tried every possible treatment and therapy? Severe headaches can’t always be relieved by conventional painkillers. That’s why there are some remedies for recurring attacks that can be helpful in significantly reducing headaches/migraines, alleviating symptoms, or resolving them over the course of weeks.

In addition to pain management and medication, Botox treatment may be a good and reliable alternative. This is because the muscle-relaxing substances inhibit the transmission of nerve impulses to the muscles for up to 6 months.

A good indication for a muscle-relaxing substance is so-called tension-type headache. Please note the following important advice from specialist Dr. Münzberg: In most cases, the use of a muscle-relaxing substance such as Botox® does not help with classic migraine. In cosmetic applications, it is used for the following dynamic facial wrinkles:

  • frown lines (glabellar lines),
  • horizontal forehead lines,
  • raised outer eyebrows,
  • crow’s feet (lines at the outer corners of the eyes),
  • perioral lines (around the mouth),
  • a pitted texture on the chin,
  • drooping corners of the mouth.

What is a migraine?

Migraines are often confused with ordinary headaches. However, migraines have far more symptoms than simple headaches. They usually begin with an aura, such as flashing lights in the eyes or numbness in the limbs. Some people affected by migraines complain not only of pain in the head, but also of nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, and visual disturbances. The pain is primarily felt on one side of the head, pulsating or throbbing intensely. Movement usually worsens the symptoms. There are also various forms of migraine, ranging from brief attacks to headaches lasting several days.

Triggers can include stress, hormonal fluctuations, and weather changes. Young women are affected more frequently than men. Is it really a migraine? The difference between tension headaches and one-sided migraine headaches lies in the fact that tension headaches involve widespread pain throughout the head. The pain can radiate from the neck into the shoulder. Cluster headaches are also frequently confused with migraines, as the pain also occurs on one side and extends into the eye area. Accompanying symptoms may include watery eyes, a runny or stuffy nose, constricted pupils, sweating on the forehead, and swelling of the eyelid.

Treating headaches caused by muscle tension with Botox®

For headaches caused by muscle tension, specialist Dr. Münzberg injects the muscle-relaxing substance (Botox®) directly into the target muscle using a very fine needle (30 G). This does not affect the skin’s sensory functions, such as feeling or touch (no numbness). The effects begin to take effect after approximately 2 to 7 days. The duration of action is approximately 3 to a maximum of 9 months, averaging about 6 months. During treatment, only the target muscle is paralyzed by Botox®. General paralysis, damage, or dysfunction of the body or other body regions is unlikely due to the small amount injected during migraine treatment.

Frequent headaches?

Warning! If you suffer from recurring headaches, it is advisable to see a doctor, such as a neurologist. Chronic headaches can be a symptom of a serious condition that requires treatment.
